Israeli rider Yali Avraham rode her mare Infernos Mistress (Inferno Sixty Six x A Ruf Mistress), owned by 70 Stables and bred and nominated by Larry Weihing, through the gates of the Jim Norick Coliseum on Wednesday to compete for the most prestigious reining titles of the season, the NRHA Open Futurity. Showing three horses in the Futurity, the palomino mare is a special one to Avraham.
“I have been riding her since the start,” she said. “The previous owner put the first 30 days on her, and then I got her in training, and I loved her from the first ride. When he decided to sell her, I just couldn’t let her go, so my dad and I bought her, and we started getting ready for the Futurity together.”
70 Stables, which Avraham owns together with her father, is based in Israel, and Avraham has been riding reining horses since she could remember. Starting her career as a youth and non pro competitor, she captured the 2019 Israel Derby Non Pro Level 4 Championship before coming to the U.S.
“I have been in the U.S. for three years now, working for [NRHA Million Dollar Rider] Justin “Gunny” Mathison,” she said. “My dad has a breeding facility in Israel, so we have shipped some mares over there and have been raising horses in Israel, where I also got into reining. I have always wanted to come to Texas and improve my riding skills, get better in reining, and be around the best people. I had a horse in training with [NRHA Professional] Hava Vital and that is how I got to know Gunny, so when I finished in the army, I decided to come here and work for him and learn from him.”
Even though Yali’s father could not join her at the NRHA Futurity to watch the duo inside the arena, she knows he has been following her runs.
“I know he is watching and cheering from overseas, and I probably already have several missed calls from him after my ride,” smiled Avraham, who was satisfied with her mare’s performance in the first go of the Futurity.
